Where it came from
The Sword of the Chosen was released in 2022 as part of the Dominaria United Commander set, a collection designed to celebrate the rich history and characters of the Magic: The Gathering plane of Dominaria. The card was crafted to mechanically represent the legendary, artifact-heavy narratives of the set, offering a way for players to buff their creatures by tapping legendary figures in their ranks. It functions as an equipment card, reflecting the high-fantasy aesthetic common to the plane's resurgence in tabletop play.
The artwork for the piece was illustrated by Antonio José Manzanedo, who utilized a bold, dramatic style to emphasize the weapon's mythical weight. The design focus was to create an item that felt earned, visually capturing the essence of a relic pulled from the annals of Dominarian history. Upon release, it was received as a niche but effective utility card for Commander players focused on 'legendary matters' tribal synergies, fitting seamlessly into decks that prioritize character-heavy board states.
