Where it came from
Sword of the Animist was originally printed in the 2015 Magic: The Gathering set Magic Origins, designed to represent the world of Zendikar and its relationship with the Nissa Revane character. Mechanically, the card was crafted as a powerful Equipment artifact that rewards players for aggressive playstyles by allowing them to search their library for land cards, effectively accelerating their mana base over the course of a game.
The art for the card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, who focused on a design that reflects the wild, untamed nature of Zendikar's mana. Upon its release, the card was widely received as a staple in Commander formats, as it provides consistent value for green-aligned decks. Its inclusion in The List—a curated collection of reprints appearing in Set Boosters—ensures its continued availability to players long after the original set rotated out of active circulation.
