Where it came from
Zaxara, the Exemplary was introduced in the Commander decks associated with the 2020 expansion, Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths, specifically appearing in the Timeless Wisdom deck. The creature is a nightmare hydra, designed to embody the themes of mana ramp and X-cost spells that define its color identity in Magic: The Gathering. Its unique mechanical synergy allows players to create hydra tokens whenever they cast a spell with a mana cost containing an X, making it a cornerstone for players focusing on high-mana strategies.
The art for the card was created by Simon Dominic, who leaned into the surreal and monstrous aesthetic of the Ikoria plane. The design focuses on a multi-headed entity that reflects both the chaotic nature of the setting and the mechanical complexity of the card’s ability. Upon release, it was widely praised by the Commander community for providing a clear, powerful focus for 'hydra tribal' decks and remains a popular choice for players looking to explore complex resource management.
