Where it came from
Infernal Tutor was originally printed in the Dissension set in 2006, serving as a powerful engine for combo decks by allowing players to search for specific cards when their hand was empty. The 2020 Judge Gift Card printing was issued as a reward for members of the Magic: The Gathering Judge Program, a group of dedicated volunteers who facilitate official tournaments. These promotional versions are distributed to recognize their service and expertise, making them a staple in the high-end secondary market.
The 2020 version features new artwork by Magali Villeneuve, a renowned illustrator whose work has become a cornerstone of the game's modern aesthetic. Villeneuve's depiction of the card captures a haunting, ethereal quality that shifts away from the original art's more visceral tone. The reception among collectors was overwhelmingly positive, as the card's stark, elegant design and the prestige associated with judge-exclusive foils made it one of the most sought-after iterations of the card.
