Provenance

Where it came from

Syphon Mind was originally introduced to the Magic: The Gathering card pool in the Commander 2011 release. As a sorcery that forces each opponent to discard a card while granting the caster card advantage equal to the number of discarded cards, it quickly became a staple in multiplayer formats where scaling effects are highly prized. The version from the Commander 2017 set features updated art by Igor Kieryluk, who leans into the darker, more visceral aesthetic characteristic of black mana cards within the game's color pie.

The 2017 reprint was part of the 'Vampiric Bloodlust' deck, a tribal-focused release celebrating the long-standing lore of vampires in the Magic multiverse. Kieryluk’s design focuses on the psychological and parasitic nature of the spell, depicting a figure siphoning energy from others to bolster their own position. While the card is a functional reprint, its inclusion in the Commander 2017 set helped ensure that the card remained accessible to newer players joining the format during a period of significant growth for the tabletop scene.
