Syphon Mind

Syphon Mind was originally featured as a rare sorcery in the Legions expansion of Magic: The Gathering, released in early 2003. As a card that forces each opponent to discard a card while granting the caster card advantage, it became a staple in multiplayer formats. The DCI Promo version, assigned collector number 40, was distributed through the Magic tournament scene as an incentive for organized play participation, specifically as a reward for local event attendance.

The artwork for this version was provided by Jeff Easley, a prolific fantasy illustrator whose work defined much of the aesthetic of Dungeons & Dragons and early Magic: The Gathering. Easley utilized his signature painterly style to depict the draining of mental essence, aiming to capture the chaotic and dark nature of the spell. The promo was well-received by the player base, as it offered a foil treatment and updated aesthetic for a card that was already highly regarded for its effectiveness in group games.
