Where it came from
Szat's Will was introduced in the 2020 Commander Legends expansion, a set uniquely designed by Wizards of the Coast to support the popular Commander format through draftable mechanics. The card functions as a sorcery that scales in power based on the number of opponents, reflecting the high-stakes, multiplayer nature of the game. Its design is deeply tied to the lore of Dominaria, specifically referencing the Elder Dragon Chromium's nemesis, the dragon Szat, and the destructive fallout of his machinations.
The illustrative work was completed by artist Ryan Pancoast, who is well-regarded for his atmospheric and narrative-driven approach to high-fantasy aesthetics. Pancoast’s design for the card focuses on capturing the overwhelming and ominous presence of Szat's influence, utilizing a color palette and composition intended to convey a sense of widespread ruin. Upon release, the card was widely received by players as a staple for black-aligned Commander decks, noted particularly for its utility in controlling board states during intense multiplayer sessions.
