Provenance

Where it came from

Tainted Field was released in 2002 as part of the Torment expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed as the second set in the Odyssey block, Torment was thematic in its focus on black mana, aiming to skew the game's color balance significantly toward the shadowy and macabre to match the set's narrative of the plane of Otaria being consumed by darkness.

The card's striking visual identity was crafted by artist John Avon, a veteran illustrator known for his expansive and atmospheric landscape work within the game. Avon employed his signature painterly style to depict the blighted, corrupted landscape of the card's namesake, balancing the grim requirements of the set's flavor with his characteristically lush and evocative use of light and texture. It remains a notable example of the land art produced during this era of design.
