Tainted Field

Tainted Field was originally introduced in the Torment set in 2002 as part of a cycle of land cards representing the corruption of the landscape. This particular version was reprinted for the Phyrexia: All Will Be One Commander set, maintaining the card's function as a utility land that taps for colorless mana or, if the player controls a swamp, for white or black mana. The artwork for this printing aligns with the thematic aesthetic of the set, emphasizing the grim, biomechanical aesthetic of New Phyrexia.

The card is designed to provide strategic flexibility for decks running multiple colors, particularly in the Commander format where mana fixing is essential. By requiring a swamp to function as a dual land, it creates a specific deck-building constraint that rewards players for committing to black mana sources. The art and design continue the long-standing tradition of depicting corrupted landscapes in the Magic: The Gathering multiverse, serving as both a functional tool and a piece of thematic world-building.
