Tainted Field

Tainted Field was originally introduced in the Torment set in 2002, emerging during a period when Wizards of the Coast was experimenting with non-basic land cycles that rewarded players for controlling specific basic land types. The design intent was to provide utility to black-aligned decks while offering a flexible mana source, fitting into the dark, gothic aesthetic established in the Magic: The Gathering lore during the Odyssey block.

The 2023 Commander Masters version, featuring collector number 1039, serves as a functional reprint that updates the card for the modern Commander format. While the original illustration by John Avon captured the bleak, desolate essence of the land, the Commander Masters iteration integrates the card into a contemporary frame designed for high-visibility gameplay. It is widely recognized by players as a staple for budget-conscious mana bases, balancing utility and accessibility within the Commander ecosystem.
