Tainted Wood

Tainted Wood, originally introduced in the Torment set in 2002, was re-released in 2024 as part of the Modern Horizons 3 Commander expansion. The card was designed to function within the context of the Odyssey block, which emphasized graveyard mechanics and thematic tension between black and green mana. As a land that provides colorless mana naturally but taps for colored mana only when a player controls a swamp, it serves as a utility staple for players utilizing multicolored decks that lean heavily into black-aligned archetypes.

The artwork for the Modern Horizons 3 edition maintains the dark, atmospheric aesthetic established by the card's history, depicting a corrupted forest landscape that mirrors the card's mechanics. The design philosophy behind the 'Tainted' cycle was to offer deck-building constraints that reward specific mana bases, providing players with affordable alternatives to high-cost lands. The card is generally regarded by the Magic: The Gathering community as a reliable, budget-friendly inclusion for Commander decks, prized more for its functional utility in specific deck builds than for high-end aesthetic rarity.
