Provenance

Where it came from

Tainted Wood was released in 2002 as part of the Torment expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, Torment was the second set in the Odyssey block and was famously designed with a heavy mechanical emphasis on the color black, challenging the traditional color pie by granting black powerful cards that rewarded players for having few or no cards in their hand.

The card’s artwork was illustrated by the artist Rick Farrell. His contribution captures the desolate and eerie aesthetic characteristic of the Odyssey block's setting, depicting a grove that has been corrupted by the ambient magical darkness of the plane of Otaria. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional utility land, offering players a way to generate either black or green mana at the cost of two life, fitting into a cycle of lands intended to assist dual-color decks during a period of complex mana-base management.
