Provenance

Where it came from

Tainted Wood first appeared in the Torment expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2002, designed as part of a cycle of lands intended to reward players for controlling a Swamp. The card was created to provide a functional mana-fixing tool for black-aligned decks, allowing them to tap for green mana only when a specific condition was met, reflecting the set's thematic emphasis on the corruption of the land.

The art was illustrated by Rob Alexander, a longtime contributor to the game known for his atmospheric landscape work. His depiction of a shadowed, decaying forest captured the gothic aesthetic of the Torment set, which was designed to explore the darker elements of the Magic multiverse. The card was later reprinted in the 2017 Commander Anthology to support multiplayer formats, maintaining its role as a budget-friendly utility land for multicolor deck builders.
