Where it came from
The Tallyman of Nurgle card, numbered 60 in the Warhammer 40,000 Commander set, was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2022 as part of a collaboration bringing the grimdark aesthetic of Games Workshop's universe into the Magic: The Gathering card game. This card features the Tallyman, a unit from the Death Guard faction, who is canonically tasked with recording the cycle of decay and the gifts of the Chaos god Nurgle. The artwork draws directly from the established visual language of Warhammer 40,000, emphasizing the plague-ridden, ritualistic nature of the faction.
The card was designed to function within the 'The Ruinous Powers' deck, providing mechanical synergy focused on card advantage and resource management. The illustration maintains the stark, horrific character design popularized by the Warhammer miniatures line, prioritizing a balance between the game's fantasy art style and the specific lore requirements of the Death Guard. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its thematic integration of Nurgle's lore, successfully translating the character's obsession with record-keeping into a persistent effect on the battlefield.
