Where it came from
The Tallyman of Nurgle card, numbered 60★, was released as part of the Warhammer 40,000 Commander set for Magic: The Gathering in 2022. This collection marked a significant collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and Games Workshop, bringing the grimdark aesthetic of the Warhammer 40,000 universe into the mechanics of Commander format play. The card features art depicting a servant of the Chaos god Nurgle, characteristically surrounded by themes of decay and ritualistic record-keeping.
The design of the card leans heavily into the lore of the Death Guard, a Chaos Space Marine legion devoted to the entropic influence of Nurgle. The Tallyman functions as a lore-accurate engine of bookkeeping, rewarding the player for actions that align with the cycle of attrition. Upon its release, the card was widely received as a flavor-perfect representation of the tabletop unit, blending the established visual language of Warhammer miniatures with the tactical depth of Magic's card mechanics.
