What it does
Trample
Phasing (This phases in or out before you untap during each of your untap steps. While it's phased out, it's treated as though it doesn't exist.)
At the beginning of your upkeep, all lands you control phase out. (They phase in before you untap during your next untap step.)
"Taniwha rolls in its sleep, and the land is awash with the waves."— Poetics of Hanan

Where it came from
Released in October 1996 as part of the Mirage expansion for Magic: The Gathering, the Taniwha card represents a significant moment in the game's design history. As one of the first sets released after the introduction of the modern expansion model, Mirage was heavily inspired by African and tropical folklore. The Taniwha, a creature from Māori mythology, was selected to bring unique, regionally inspired legendary entities to the game's evolving roster of mythic threats.
The card's distinctive art was provided by Donato Giancola, who created a haunting and ethereal depiction of the creature emerging from the ocean. Mechanically, the card was designed by the Wizards of the Coast team to balance high-power stats with a challenging 'phasing' drawback, a recurring theme in the Mirage set meant to reflect the fluid, shifting nature of spirits and legendary beasts. It remains a notable example of the more experimental and thematic design philosophy prevalent in mid-90s Magic development.
