Where it came from
Tar Fiend was released in 2008 as part of the Shards of Alara expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set introduced the concept of the Alara shard, a unique plane split into five distinct realities defined by specific color philosophies, with this card representing the Grixis shard, a world defined by decay and the pursuit of power through life force extraction.
The artwork was created by illustrator Dave Kendall, who utilized a grim, visceral aesthetic to capture the essence of a creature composed of necrotic sludge and filth. The design focused on conveying a sense of inevitable corruption, aligning with the mechanical intent of the card, which forces opponents to discard cards to fuel the creature's growth, a hallmark of the Grixis playstyle during that era.
