Where it came from
The TARDIS card was released in 2023 as part of the Magic: The Gathering Universes Beyond: Doctor Who Commander decks. This specific version, numbered 4, was designed as a promotional foil card offered exclusively to attendees of MagicFest 2023 events. It serves as a tribute to the long-running British science fiction series, incorporating the iconic time-traveling craft into the game's mechanics through the Planechase system.
The art direction aimed to capture the ethereal, retro-futuristic aesthetic of the TARDIS, blending the established visual language of the show with the high-fantasy artistic style of Magic: The Gathering. The card was received positively by both tabletop gamers and Doctor Who enthusiasts for its thematic accuracy, particularly its ability to function as a mobile command post within the game's ruleset, effectively simulating the show's core premise of traversing space and time.
