Tawnos, Urza's Apprentice

Tawnos, Urza's Apprentice was released in 2018 as part of the Commander 2018 set, specifically featured in the 'Exquisite Invention' deck. The character of Tawnos originates from the early lore of Magic: The Gathering, specifically the Antiquities expansion, where he served as the primary artificer and loyal lieutenant to the archmage Urza during the Brothers' War. His inclusion as a legendary creature card was long anticipated by players familiar with the deep narrative history of the game.

The card illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who depicted Tawnos in his characteristic artifice-heavy attire, emphasizing his role as an inventor. The design of the card focuses on artifact synergy, reflecting his lore-based reputation for replicating and enhancing Urza’s mechanical designs. Upon release, the card was well-received by the Commander community for providing a dedicated commander for artifact-copying strategies, filling a niche that had been largely unexplored for legacy characters from the game's inception.
