Where it came from
Tawnos, the Toymaker is a legendary creature card first introduced in The Brothers' War expansion of Magic: The Gathering, released in late 2022. The set explores the historic conflict between the artificer brothers Urza and Mishra, centering on the mechanical ingenuity that defined their world. Tawnos serves as a pivotal figure in this narrative, known as Urza’s chief apprentice, and this card depicts his specialized role in creating intricate mechanical constructs.
The card illustration was crafted by artist Lie Setiawan, who utilized a detailed, technical aesthetic to emphasize Tawnos's identity as an inventor. The design intentionally evokes the clockwork, brass-heavy steampunk visual language established for the Artificer faction in the game. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its ability to double the output of artifact creatures, fitting perfectly into the resource-management mechanics associated with the character's legacy in the game's lore.
