Where it came from
Octopus Umbra was released in 2018 as part of the Commander 2018 set for Magic: The Gathering. As an Aura enchantment with the 'totem armor' keyword, it was designed to provide a layer of protection for a creature, reflecting a thematic focus on defensive utility and resilience that has been a recurring mechanic in the game since its introduction in the Rise of the Eldrazi set. The card was specifically included in the Adaptive Enchantment preconstructed deck, which highlighted the synergy between enchantments and creatures.
The artwork for Octopus Umbra was created by illustrator Svetlin Velinov. He crafted a surreal, tentacled aesthetic that draws from the mysterious, oceanic imagery associated with the card's namesake. The visual design focuses on an imposing, multi-limbed entity emerging from the depths, intended to evoke a sense of otherworldly strength and aquatic power. The card was received by the player base as a niche but effective tool for Voltron-style strategies, where players concentrate resources on a single creature to win the game.
