Where it came from
The Strixhaven Art Series was released in 2021 as a collection of high-quality, borderless art cards designed to showcase the vivid illustrations from the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. These cards were distributed as a special insert in set boosters, intended to highlight the work of individual artists who contributed to the set's magical, academic aesthetic. They function as collectible prints rather than playable game pieces, celebrating the visual storytelling of the game's multiverse.
The art for Teach by Example was created by illustrator Randy Vargas, known for his dramatic lighting and character-focused compositions. Vargas designed the piece to capture the essence of the Prismari college, emphasizing the creative and often chaotic manifestation of elemental magic. Within the game's lore, the image depicts a moment of mentorship where the principles of spectacle and spontaneity are passed between mages, reflecting the set's broader theme of collegiate study and arcane experimentation.
