Where it came from
Teachings of the Archaics was released as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages promotional card set in 2021. Designed for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, the card features the distinct visual style of the Strixhaven plane, a university for mages that emphasizes the academic pursuit of magic. It was created to provide players with a draw-dependent spell that scales based on the opponent's hand size, reflecting the theme of intellectual competition prevalent in the expansion.
The artwork for this specific promo variant was crafted to highlight the ethereal, scholarly aesthetic of the institution's legendary Archaics. The design team sought to capture a sense of ancient wisdom and arcane mystery, utilizing the extended-art frame style popular among collectors of the set. Upon its release, it was well-regarded by players for its thematic integration into the game's broader academic narrative and its unique aesthetic contribution to the Strixhaven collection.
