Team Spirit

Team Spirit was released in 1998 as part of the Unglued expansion, the first silver-bordered set produced by Wizards of the Coast for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was designed as a parody of the game itself, intentionally breaking standard rules and mechanics to explore humor and unconventional play experiences. The card captures the lighthearted, experimental spirit of the late 1990s design team, who sought to challenge player expectations through irreverent card types and self-referential mechanics.

The art and mechanical design for Team Spirit were conceived to highlight the absurdity of teamwork in a competitive environment. Like many cards in the Unglued set, it was created to exist outside the bounds of tournament legality, allowing artists and designers to prioritize playfulness over the complex balancing required for standard sets. It is widely recognized by collectors as a foundational piece of the game's history of satire, representing a time when the developers felt emboldened to experiment with the format for the sake of entertainment.
