Where it came from
Tempered Steel was originally released as a rare enchantment in the Scars of Mirrodin set for Magic: The Gathering in 2010. This DCI Promo version, featuring unique artwork, was distributed as a participation reward for Friday Night Magic events, a long-standing organized play initiative designed to foster local community engagement at game stores worldwide.
The artwork for this specific promotional printing was commissioned to highlight the artifact-centric themes of the Mirrodin block, which focused on a metallic, industrial aesthetic. Like many DCI Promos from that era, the illustration was intended to offer a distinct visual interpretation of the card's mechanical function, providing players with a collectible variant that incentivized participation in the game's competitive circuit.
