Dauntless Dourbark

Dauntless Dourbark was released as a promotional card through the DCI (Duelists' Convocation International) program, which served as the official organized play structure for Magic: The Gathering. As a 'Friday Night Magic' promo, this foil treatment of the card was distributed at local game stores to encourage participation in weekly competitive events. It was selected for this treatment during the Lorwyn block era, a period defined by a vibrant, folkloric aesthetic inspired by European mythology and the whimsical, often dark, nature of faerie tales.

The card features artwork by Mark Zug, a frequent contributor to the game known for his textured, painterly approach. In this depiction, he emphasizes the imposing, arboreal nature of the Treefolk creature type. The design intention was to highlight the card’s ability to grow in strength based on the number of other Treefolk in play, making it a centerpiece for tribal decks. Upon its release, the promo version was well-received by collectors and players alike for its unique foil etching and the way the metallic sheen enhanced the intricate details of the bark and forest floor depicted in the frame.
