Where it came from
Temporal Cleansing was released in 2023 as part of the March of the Machine set, a pivotal expansion in the Magic: The Gathering multiverse saga. The card represents the climactic struggle of the Phyrexians' invasion of the Multiverse, specifically illustrating the use of time-magic to undo the ravages left by the mechanical onslaught. It serves as a narrative anchor for the set's theme of restoration and the cosmic stakes involved in the conflict.
The artwork was commissioned by Wizards of the Coast and illustrated by Greg Staples, who focused on ethereal, shifting imagery to convey the concept of rewinding time. The card was designed as a high-cost sorcery intended to provide players with a powerful board-reset tool in the Limited and Commander formats. Upon its release, it was noted by the player community for its tactical utility and its thematic consistency with the set’s broader mechanical focus on manipulating game states.
