Where it came from
Glissa, Herald of Predation was released in 2023 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion March of the Machine. This set depicts the climax of the Phyrexian invasion across the multiverse, and this card specifically portrays Glissa Sunslayer after her complete transformation into a Phyrexian praetor. The card was designed to represent her role as a herald during this conflict, utilizing mechanics that reflect her lethal, predatory nature within the lore of the Mirrodin plane.
The illustration for this card was created by artist Lius Lasahido, who opted for a visceral, high-contrast aesthetic that emphasizes the biomechanical horror synonymous with the Phyrexian faction. By focusing on the integration of organic flesh and cold, metallic prosthetics, the design visually communicates her status as a corrupted leader. Upon release, the card was noted by players for its aggressive stat line and utility, effectively bridging the gap between narrative-driven storytelling and competitive gameplay mechanics.
