Where it came from
Invasion of Xerex // Vertex Paladin is a double-faced Battle card released in the 2023 Magic: The Gathering set, March of the Machine. This set marked the conclusion of the Phyrexian Invasion story arc, introducing the 'Battle' card type to represent the ongoing conflict across various planes of the multiverse. The design team created these cards to integrate thematic objectives directly into gameplay, requiring players to 'defeat' a battle to flip it into a powerful permanent.
The card depicts the plane of Xerex, a surreal and geometry-defying environment characterized by shifting perspectives and impossible physics. The artwork was crafted to capture this dreamlike aesthetic, emphasizing the disjointed, multi-dimensional nature of the location. Upon release, the set was noted for its experimental mechanics, and this card specifically was received by players as a tactical tool for tempo-oriented decks looking to manipulate the state of the battlefield through its unique transformation trigger.
