Where it came from
Temporal Extortion was originally printed in the Planar Chaos set in 2007, representing a black-aligned take on the extra-turn spells traditionally found in blue. The card functions as a 'punisher' mechanic, forcing opponents to choose between letting the caster take an extra turn or paying half their life total. It emerged during an era when Wizards of the Coast was actively experimenting with color-pie bending, deliberately pushing black into mechanics like time manipulation to flavor the chaos of the set's alternate-reality theme.
This specific iteration, numbered 1859, was released as part of a Secret Lair drop. The art was reimagined by artist Kael Ngu, who transitioned the card's visual identity from its original grotesque imagery toward a more sleek, modern aesthetic typical of the Secret Lair series. This series was designed to offer players and collectors stylized, premium versions of existing cards, emphasizing high-end, illustrative talent to differentiate these versions from standard set printings.
