Where it came from
Temporal Extortion was released in 2007 as part of the Planar Chaos set, the second expansion in the Time Spiral block for Magic: The Gathering. The set was built on the premise of an alternate timeline, featuring color-shifted versions of iconic mechanics and philosophies. This card embodies the 'color bleed' theme, as the mechanic of taking an extra turn is traditionally associated with blue mana, but here it is presented as a black spell that forces a high cost upon the opponent.
The artwork was created by illustrator Pete Venters, a prolific artist for the game known for his distinct, expressive style. In designing the visual language for this card, the goal was to convey the oppressive, transactional nature of black magic. The card was received by the player community as a controversial but flavorful experiment, serving as a signature example of the design team's attempt to subvert established mechanical expectations during that era of the game.
