Temporal Manipulation

Temporal Manipulation was released in 1998 as part of the Portal Second Age expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed specifically to introduce newer players to the game by simplifying complex mechanics and removing interactions that occurred during an opponent's turn. Because the mechanics were intended to be intuitive and accessible, the set focused on straightforward spells and creatures, making this extra-turn effect a notable inclusion in a streamlined environment.

The card was illustrated by Donato Giancola, a renowned fantasy artist known for his detailed, classical approach to speculative fiction. In the context of the Portal sets, where the art direction often leaned toward high-fantasy aesthetics to capture the imagination of new players, Giancola’s depiction of time-bending imagery remains a hallmark of the era's visual style. The card gained long-term notoriety not just for its scarcity in the set, but for the fundamental power of its effect in more competitive formats, where taking an additional turn is consistently one of the most impactful maneuvers in the game.
