Temporal Mastery

Temporal Mastery was released in 2012 as a mythic rare card in the Magic: The Gathering set Avacyn Restored. The card was designed as a thematic callback to Time Walk, a powerful spell from the game’s earliest days, by incorporating the 'miracle' mechanic. This mechanic allowed players to cast the spell for a significantly reduced cost if it was the first card drawn during their turn, simulating the unpredictable nature of divine intervention central to the set’s narrative.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Jaime Jones, who sought to capture the ethereal and overwhelming sensation of pausing time within the gothic-horror aesthetic of the plane of Innistrad. Upon its release, Temporal Mastery was met with significant intrigue from the competitive community, primarily due to its potential to swing the momentum of a game suddenly. While it remained a niche inclusion in various formats, it is frequently cited as a quintessential example of high-variance, 'splashy' design from the mid-modern era of the game.
