Temporary Insanity

Temporary Insanity was released in 2002 as part of the Torment expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed with a heavy focus on black mana and graveyard recursion, reflecting the grim, planar setting of the Odyssey block's storyline. This card, a red instant, was crafted to capture the chaotic flavor of shifting loyalty and momentary aggression, mechanical themes frequently explored within the game's color pie.

The card features illustration by Kev Walker, a prolific artist known for his gritty, high-contrast style that defined much of the visual identity for Magic during the early 2000s. Walker aimed to convey the physical and psychological toll of a sudden, forced loss of control, utilizing a visceral aesthetic that mirrored the card's function of seizing an opponent's creature for a single turn. It remains a recognizable example of the 'threat' effect prevalent in red decks of that era.
