Where it came from
Temporary Lockdown was released as part of the Dominaria United set in September 2022, a release designed to celebrate the return to Magic: The Gathering's foundational plane. The card was featured in the Dominaria United Promos collection, specifically appearing with a unique borderless alternate-art treatment to distinguish it from the standard set version. This iteration aimed to emphasize the narrative themes of temporal stasis and magical preservation central to the set's storyline.
The artwork for this specific promo version was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a well-regarded artist known for his ethereal and light-focused style within the game. Voss intended to convey the sense of a suspended moment in time, utilizing soft color palettes and intricate details to reflect the spell's mechanical function of exiling low-mana-value permanents. Upon its release, the card was received positively by the competitive community for its efficacy as a board wipe in constructed formats, while collectors frequently sought the promo variant for its distinct visual aesthetic.
