Provenance

Where it came from

Tempting Wurm was released in the 2002 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Onslaught. The set was designed to emphasize the creature type mechanics that defined the block, and the card was created as a high-risk, high-reward green creature that encouraged players to empty their hands in exchange for a massive 5/5 body for only two mana.

The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Matt Cavotta, who utilized a distinct, moody style that characterized much of the Onslaught block's visual identity. The card is noted for its provocative design, as its ability allows an opponent to put any number of permanent cards from their hand onto the battlefield, making it a polarizing card that effectively bridges the gap between powerful utility and significant strategic vulnerability.
