Tendrils of Corruption

Tendrils of Corruption was first introduced in the 2006 Magic: The Gathering set Coldsnap. Designed as a common-rarity instant, it functions as both removal and a life-gain mechanic, scaling in power based on the number of Swamps the player controls. The card was specifically crafted to support black-aligned decks in the high-mana-curve environment of the Coldsnap expansion, becoming a staple in various mono-black control archetypes.

The artwork for this version was rendered by Vance Kovacs, who utilized his signature dark, atmospheric style to capture the essence of decaying magic. Kovacs, known for his haunting depictions of fantasy landscapes and creatures, aimed to visually represent the literal drain of vitality implied by the card's name. It was later included in 'The List', a curated selection of reprints integrated into modern booster packs to provide players with access to older, mechanically significant cards.
