Ghost Lantern // Bind Spirit

Ghost Lantern // Bind Spirit was originally introduced in the Magic: The Gathering set Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate, which released in 2022. The card is a double-faced design that reflects the Dungeons & Dragons lore of the Forgotten Realms, specifically focusing on the theme of trapping and binding spirits within a magical vessel. It was designed as an artifact that provides both graveyard utility and a way to interact with the board state, fitting into the set's broader goal of supporting multiplayer Commander gameplay.

The art and mechanical design for this card were developed by the Wizards of the Coast design team to integrate seamlessly with the flavor of the Baldur's Gate expansion. The dual-faced nature of the card—transforming from an equipment-like artifact into a creature—was intended to give players a flexible tool for recursion and board presence. Upon its release, it was noted by players for its efficiency in Limited and Commander formats, eventually being included in 'The List', a rotating selection of cards from Magic's history that can appear in set booster packs.
