Provenance

Where it came from

Compost was released in 1999 as part of the Urza's Destiny expansion, the final installment of the Urza block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to complete the multi-year narrative arc involving the artificer Urza. The card itself reflects the set's mechanical focus on resource management and graveyard interaction, providing a persistent way for green decks to generate card advantage when opponents play black spells.

The artwork for Compost was illustrated by Greg Staples, whose atmospheric and textured style became a staple of the era. The design intent was to provide a niche sideboard option that punished mono-black strategies by turning the destruction of their permanents into a cycle of card replenishment for the player. While it initially saw limited competitive play, it has since become a recognized cult classic among players for its distinct, flavorful interaction with the game's color pie.
