Where it came from
The Celestus was released as part of the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Innistrad: Midnight Hunt. It represents a central artifact within the set's narrative, serving as a massive orrery used by the people of Innistrad to track the movement of the sun and moon. Its design reflects the gothic horror theme of the expansion, focusing on the cycle of day and night which acts as the core mechanical hook of the set.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, who utilized the game's established dark fantasy aesthetic to emphasize the structure's scale and ethereal celestial power. The design was received as a key utility artifact within the meta, valued for its ability to manipulate day and night cycles while providing mana ramp and card selection, establishing it as a staple in the Commander format.
