Where it came from
Tovolar's Huntmaster was released in 2021 as part of the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to serve as a cornerstone for the set's werewolf-themed mechanics, specifically highlighting the return of the daybound and nightbound keyword. Its development was focused on capturing the predatory nature of the set's horror-themed aesthetic, providing a repeatable trigger that rewards players for engaging with the transforming mechanics central to the Innistrad plane.
The artwork for this double-faced card was created by illustrator Johannes Voss. Voss sought to emphasize the duality of the character, utilizing distinct lighting and anatomical shifts to distinguish between Tovolar's human guise and his monstrous transformation. Upon its debut, the card was well-received by the player base for its efficiency in aggressive playstyles and its thematic resonance with the established lore of the werewolf tribes within the game's multiverse.
