Where it came from
The Chain Veil debuted in the 2014 Magic: The Gathering set Magic 2015, serving as a pivotal artifact representing a cursed relic of immense power from the game's lore. Its design, illustrated by Aleksi Briclot, portrays the object as a glowing, ethereal mask-like construct intertwined with dark, swirling chains, intended to evoke feelings of ancient, corrupting magic and high-stakes risk for the player.
Mechanically, the card was designed to reflect the influence of the Planeswalker Liliana Vess, whose narrative arc involves her servitude to the Veil's dark master. Upon its release, the card was received as a highly flavorful 'build-around' artifact, favored by players who enjoyed complex engine-building strategies despite the significant life-cost penalty imposed by its activation ability.
