Where it came from
The Core, numbered 40 in The Lost Caverns of Ixalan Art Series, was released in late 2023 as part of a specialty product line by Wizards of the Coast. These cards serve as collectible recreations of the artwork featured in the main expansion set, designed to highlight the illustrative work behind the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. They are distinguished by their landscape orientation and the inclusion of the artist's signature on the face of the card, intended to elevate the status of digital fantasy illustrations to that of a gallery piece.
The artwork for this specific piece was created by artist Livia Prima, who has contributed extensively to the visual identity of the Ixalan setting. In this piece, Prima aimed to capture the subterranean majesty and ecological strangeness of the Core, the deep-earth environment central to the plane's lore. The illustration was received positively by the community for its vibrant color palette and depth, which emphasizes the theme of exploring an untamed, ancient subterranean world.
