Where it came from
The Cruelty of Gix was released in 2022 as part of the Dominaria United set for Magic: The Gathering. The card represents a pivotal moment in the lore of the Multiverse, depicting the iconic Phyrexian antagonist Gix during the early historical conflicts that defined the plane of Dominaria. Its inclusion in the set serves as a narrative bridge for long-term players, grounding the modern Phyrexian invasion storyline in the deep history of the game.
The illustration was crafted by artist Chase Stone, who employed a dark, cinematic aesthetic to emphasize the oppressive and malevolent nature of the character. The design team focused on creating a card that balanced utility with thematic weight, utilizing the 'Saga' card type to mechanically replicate the unfolding of a historical tragedy. It was received positively by the community for its blend of powerful gameplay effects and its contribution to the overarching lore of the Phyrexian threat.
