Where it came from
The Cruelty of Gix was originally featured as a rare card in the Dominaria United expansion for Magic: The Gathering, released in September 2022. This specific iteration is the promotional version, identified by collector number 87p, which highlights the narrative return to the iconic plane of Dominaria and the lingering influence of the Phyrexian antagonist Gix. The card represents a moment of dark sorcery within the game's deep lore, mechanically allowing players to manipulate their graveyard to resurrect fallen creatures or planeswalkers.
The visual aesthetic was brought to life by artist Svetlin Velinov, whose work on this piece emphasizes the gothic, biomechanical horror associated with the Phyrexians. Velinov focused on conveying the oppressive and sacrificial nature of the character, utilizing a muted, unsettling palette that distinguishes it from the more vibrant hero cards in the set. The card was well-received by players for its tactical versatility in competitive formats, serving as a functional piece of art that bridges the gap between historical Magic narrative and modern mechanical playability.
