Where it came from
The Dross Pits art card belongs to the Phyrexia: All Will Be One Art Series, a subset released in early 2023 to showcase the intricate visual identity of the Magic: The Gathering expansion. These cards were produced as collectible inserts found in set boosters, designed to highlight the world-building and aesthetic shift toward the mechanical, biomechanical, and nightmarish landscapes characteristic of the Phyrexians.
The piece features the artwork of Sam Burley, a veteran artist for the game known for his atmospheric and moody environmental illustrations. In this design, Burley captures the oppressive, industrial toxicity of the Dross Pits, a region within the New Phyrexia plane. The illustration emphasizes a color palette of deep oils and sickly greens, aiming to evoke a sense of decay and inescapable architectural horror that aligns with the set's narrative of total assimilation.
