Where it came from
Herd Migration was released as part of the Dominaria United set in 2022, serving as a nostalgic callback to the plane of Dominaria, which holds deep significance in Magic: The Gathering lore. The card was designed to capture the essence of the game’s roots, emphasizing the connection between the natural world and the tactical mechanics of green-aligned decks. As a promotional release, it features specific art and border treatments intended to highlight the importance of land-based strategies within the fantasy setting.
The illustration for this piece was crafted to evoke a sense of vast, untamed nature, depicting a group of Kavu trekking across the landscape. The artistic direction leaned into the high-fantasy aesthetic that has defined the series for decades, aiming to provide a visual narrative of growth and momentum. Upon release, the card was received as a functional staple for players focused on ramp strategies, appreciated for both its versatility in deck construction and its role in reinforcing the thematic identity of the Dominaria block.
