Where it came from
The Fair Basilica was released in early 2023 as part of the Phyrexia: All Will Be One set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It serves as a land card representing the aesthetic shift of the plane of Mirrodin as it was systematically corrupted by the Phyrexians, specifically highlighting the white-aligned porcelain landscape of the Machine Orthodoxy. The card was designed to support the set's mechanics regarding poison counters and artifact-based synergies that define the Phyrexian threat.
The art was created by illustrator Lucas Graciano, who utilized a clean, stark architectural style to evoke the unsettling perfection of the Phyrexian regime. By focusing on the contrast between the pristine white structures and the underlying biomechanical decay, the design intended to emphasize the oppressive nature of the faction. The piece was well-received by players for its atmospheric visual storytelling, successfully capturing the unsettling transition of the plane into a state of artificial unity.
