Where it came from
The Goose Mother was released in 2023 as part of the Secrets of Strixhaven Commander set, a supplemental product tied to the Magic: The Gathering card game. The card was designed to highlight the whimsical and fantastical elements of the Strixhaven University setting, specifically focusing on the playful, fairy-tale aesthetic associated with the Quandrix college of magical mathematics. Its inclusion in a Commander-focused deck provided players with a unique mana-ramping and creature-generating tool that resonated with themes of growth and biological manipulation.
The artwork was created by illustrator Manuel Castañón, who aimed to portray the creature with a sense of maternal protection mixed with high-fantasy majesty. The design seeks to blend the mundane appearance of a goose with the awe-inspiring scale of a legendary beast, effectively grounding the abstract magical concepts of Strixhaven in a recognizable, albeit surreal, visual language. Upon its debut, the card was well-received by players for its flavorful design and its versatility within green-blue Commander archetypes.
