Where it came from
Dina, Essence Brewer was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages Commander expansion. The card was designed to represent the Witherbloom College within the set, which focuses on the duality of life and death, reflecting a naturalistic, swamp-aligned aesthetic. Mechanically, the card was built to reward players for gaining life, allowing them to trade that life gain for direct damage to opponents.
The art for Dina was created by illustrator Magali Villeneuve, who is well-regarded for her contributions to the Magic: The Gathering card game. Villeneuve aimed to capture the essence of a druid-like practitioner of life and decay, utilizing a color palette of deep greens and blacks to anchor the character within the Witherbloom aesthetic. Upon release, the card was widely received by the Commander community as a potent and efficient commander for sacrifice-themed decks.
